Pierson High School students collaborate on multilingual project
“It all started with a simple idea from Mrs. Boerum,” said Pierson High School English as a New Language teacher Lindamarie Kirby. “To create a mural that highlights influential figures in Latin American history and their impact on the world.”
With guidance from both Kirby and Pierson Spanish teacher Penelope Boerum, Pierson High School students in both ENL and Spanish classes collaborated on an art, history, and language-based project.
“The project was designed to create a multilingual art piece that not only honors the rich contributions of Latin American historical figures but also fosters collaboration and communication among students from diverse linguistic backgrounds,” said Kirby. By combining classes, the students could engage with their peers while celebrating their own cultural heritage.
In preparation for the mural, the students conducted research on a variety of historical figures, such as Selena Quintanilla, César Chávez, Roberto Clemente, Sonia Sotomayor, Ellen Ochoa, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and Juan Herrera. Students presented their findings, and any personal connections, to the group, utilizing their native language alongside English. By presenting in their second language, the project enriched the students’ learning experience and helped them build confidence in their language skills.
“Creating a mural is no small feat,” said Kirby, “and this project provided an excellent opportunity for students to engage in problem-solving and teamwork.” The students collaborated on design and project management. Though they encountered challenges, such as coordinating their artistic styles and ensuring everyone’s contributions were represented, students learned negotiation, compromising, and critical thinking skills.
“The final project includes a tapestry of colors and languages reflecting the diverse backgrounds of the students involved,” said Kirby. “This interactive approach not only celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month but also highlights the beauty of cultural diversity within our Pierson community.”
