Pierson students perform ‘Freaky Friday’
A bit of magic happened at Sag Harbor’s Pierson High School auditorium with the performance of “Freaky Friday,” featuring a mother and daughter who switch bodies. The musical included several solo and group performances, along with well-rehearsed, choreographed dancing.
The theatre group performed an impressive 23 songs, with several scene changes and props. Beginning with the preparations for a wedding, the audience learns that mother, Katharine Blake, played by senior Jackie Iulo, and daughter Ellie Blake, played by junior Ally Cottrell, can’t see eye-to-eye during these different stages of their lives. With the help of supporting characters, such as Adam, Ellie’s high school crush portrayed by junior Sabrina McManus, the two begin to learn more about each other’s lives and the struggles they each face.
As the play progresses, the audience was delighted by the dramatized struggles of a mother going back to high school and a rebellious high schooler taking on the responsibilities of an adult, including becoming the mother figure to her little brother. The two learn secrets about each other that help them realize they are human like everyone else, and that if they choose to listen to one another, it can help them better understand one another.
“Freaky Friday” was an all-hands-on-deck performance, with crew members bringing energetic dances, colorful backdrops and performances on and off stage, all while syncing up with a live orchestra.
