Sag Harbor First Graders Plant Seeds in Hands-On Science Lesson

First graders at Sag Harbor Elementary School recently took their science lessons outdoors, transforming classroom concepts into a hands-on learning experience by planting seeds in cups.
As part of their Science Learning Standards, students have been exploring the plant life cycle, learning how plants grow, what they need to survive, and the role of different plant structures. The outdoor activity gave students the opportunity to apply these lessons in a tangible and engaging way, reinforcing key concepts through direct observation and participation.
With soil, seeds, and plenty of curiosity, students carefully planted their own seeds, setting the stage for ongoing observation as they track germination and growth in the coming weeks. The activity not only supported science instruction but also encouraged responsibility and excitement about the natural world.
Adding to the special nature of the day, the class’s “Class Mom” organized a meaningful multigenerational moment by inviting her own parents, her child’s grandparents, to join the activity. Their presence brought an added layer of community and connection, as families participated alongside students in this shared learning experience.
Through activities like this, Sag Harbor Elementary continues to foster experiential learning while building strong connections between school, students, and families
